2024 SAUVIGNON BLANC
THE WINE
After harvesting Stonemark blocks for sparkling wine earlier in the season, we saw immense potential in the Rattlesnake Hills Sauvignon Blanc. Planted on south-facing, rocky slopes in the cooler northern edge of the Rattlesnake Hills AVA, this high-altitude site experiences strong winds that stress the vines and delay ripening, resulting in intensely focused flavors. Ripening about two weeks later than our other Sauvignon Blanc blocks, the fruit developed vibrant citrus notes and crushed oyster shell minerality, making it a clear choice for DarkRock.
In the cellar, the wine was fermented in concrete tanks to enhance minerality and stainless steel to preserve freshness and bright acidity. Post-fermentation, 40% was aged in new French puncheons and 60% in neutral barrels sur lie for six months to add an elegant complexity.
The 2024 Dark Rock Sauvignon Blanc is bright and vibrant, showcasing classic notes of lemongrass, passionfruit, and baked lemon. Rich flavors of lemon chiffon, pomelo, white peach, and brioche from oak aging balance its zesty acidity with a creamy roundness from sur-lie aging. The finish is fresh and lingering, with hints of vanilla and crushed oyster shells.
